Title Transfer Complete on Galiano Affordable Housing Site
September 22, 2025
Galiano Island, BC – Transfer of title for the 2-hectare lot zoned for 12 units of affordable rental housing at 1663 Georgia View Road is now complete.
This important milestone marks the culmination of a process led by the Gulf Islands Galisle Affordable Rental Housing Society (GIGARHS) beginning in 2018 with pre-development, rezoning in 2022, and subdivision in 2024.
Title has been transferred from the Galiano Club to the Galiano Affordable Living Initiative Society (GALI), with GIGARHS as development partner. GALI and GIGARHS recognize the work of the Galiano Club for seeing the original vision for the Community Forest through to fruition.
Over the last few years, GALI and GIGARHS have worked closely together to address the unmet housing need on Galiano Island.
“The efforts of tens of thousands of volunteer hours, strong community support, and significant contributions from private and public funders helped us get to this point,” noted Colleen Doty, Executive Director of GIGARHS. “We are now advancing toward building permit.”
The Islands Trust Housing Needs Assessment in 2025 identified Galiano as requiring 132 new homes over the next five years to address deficits in homelessness and households experiencing extreme unaffordability.
“This land represents secure and affordable housing futures for 12 Galiano households, and is an important step forward in meeting our critical housing shortage,” said Lori Seay-Potter, Executive Director of GALI.
GALI is involved in another project on Galiano Island. Thuthiqut Hulelum’, a 20-unit affordable housing project at 280 Georgeson Bay Road, owned by the Capital Regional District, will be operated by GALI upon construction.
GALI and GIGARHS thank the community for their tremendous support as they work together with governments and funders to address Galiano’s urgent housing shortage.
